The Rising diné - Wild Horses in Kayenta
A short documentary about the wild horse population near Monument Valley, AZ and the Navajo Nation's attempts to gentle them. An estimated 1,000,000 wild horses roam the Four Corners region of the United States Southwest. A danger to the community, many horses are put to slaughter by the government. However, the horse is sacred to the Navajo community and there is another way to help these animals - An ancient way developed over many centuries by the Navajo peoples of the region. This is known as Gentling.
This documentary covers the competition by 4 Navajo men to gentle a wild horse in under 24 hours. Their methods can be used to help the horse population and the community as a whole providing well trained working horses and opportunities for younger generations to interact with nature and their heritage.
